In 2023 Tony Marshall, New Zealand’s leading rural tax expert will be delivering a series of three Special Edition Webinars, focusing on the particular issues and problems that are presented to accountants with rural clients.

This series consists of three stand alone webinars, with a focus on navigating the regulatory and tax challenges associated with a farming business.
Each webinar focuses on the different parts of a farming business; the people, the livestock and the land.
The webinar series will use real life situations incorporated into the fictional James family scenario to highlight the issues farm advisors need to consider when advising their clients.
The James family operate an existing farming business and are looking to expand with the purchase of more land for a new standalone farming operation. The new farming operation forms part of their succession plan for them and their farming children. It is against this backdrop that we will consider the issues facing farming businesses.
Webinar 1 - The People: Wednesday 31st May 2023, 10am - 11:15am
Following the purchase of the new farming property, the James family must establish new employment and contracting relationships.
This webinar will focus on the issues to consider when employing staff, the tax and regulatory issues to be considered, including the following:
- Farm salary packages
- Farm worker allowances
- Accommodation on farm
- Farm vehicles
- FBT and farming
- Farm costs and succession when the farm keeps paying

Webinar 2 - The Livestock: Wednesday 16th August 2023, 10am - 11:15am
On purchasing the new farm, the James family must stock the farm, acquiring livestock from third parties and other parts of their existing farming business.
This webinar will focus on the application of the livestock rules to those transactions, including the following:
- Choosing a livestock valuation method
- Consequences and limitations of choice
- Associated persons livestock transfers
- Difficult livestock – horses, farm dogs and bees
- Stud livestock – the high-priced livestock rules

Webinar 3 - The Land: Wednesday 18th October 2023, 10am - 11:15am
The final webinar in the series focuses on the purchase of the new farm by the James, and the tax issues to consider upon purchase, and after purchase as they incur expenditure on the land to make it suitable for their farming activities. This webinar will focus on the following land related topics:
- Taxation of farmland sales
- Purchase price allocation
- Deductibility of development expenditure
- Tax treatment of the farmhouse and related land
- Repairs and maintenance
